How Much Foundation Should You Be Using?

How Much Foundation Should You Be Using?

I’ll start off by saying, wear it however you feel most comfortable! These are just my personal opinions… but my personal opinion is not too damn much!! Let me just jump right in to the point, that seeing people pour/squirt/drip their foundation from the bottle right onto their face just really irks tf out of me. Why? It’s just so incredibly unnecessary, and I don’t want to come off as super judge-y or whatever, but we pretty much only learn how to do makeup from the internet lately so let’s talk about how this habit started; then we’ll discuss how much product one really needs!

You may have noticed that makeup tutorials have become more performative than educational now a days, and that makes sense because if your content isn’t getting any views than do you really even matter?? Jk of course you matter, but you get what I’m trying to say. Seeing a clip of someone dumping massive amounts of makeup on their face is way more eye catching than the more practical version of applying it, and that’s where I think it all went haywire. We watch so many people, so many “Beauty Gurus” make videos of themselves applying their makeup this way that now we think this is the way that foundation should actually be applied. The truth is most faces cannot wear this amount of product all day, or even for a few hours, without it turning into a mess. Not to be harsh. This is for those who have been following what all the influencers are telling them to do and still feel like their makeup still doesn’t look the way they want. No amount of setting sprays or baking powders are going to give you that filtered look you’ve been sold on.

So, what is the recommended of amount of foundation??? …Like, a dime sized amount, at least to start with. No matter how much coverage I actually need, I always prefer to layer my product and build on any areas that need more coverage. Whether I am working on brides who need makeup to last all day, or working on a photoshoot, I prefer to use a foundation that is full coverage but use it sparingly all over the face then go back and build with more product on any areas that I feel may need more, like around the nose and chin area, or around the jawline where any heavier blemishes may be.

Applying too much product tends to enhance any texture on the face, this texture could be fine lines, breakouts or acne. I think it is important to first decide your skin type, how much coverage you want, and to know what type of finish you’d like your makeup effect to have. From there you can pair that with a concealer and figure out what amount works best for you, start with the recommended amount then build from there.
